The Process for a Commissioned Painting

Mike wanted something truly special for his wife for Christmas, something that captured one of the most meaningful moments of their life together: a custom painting of their intimate wedding. The magic of that day, combined with their shared love for travel and adventure, deserved more than a simple photograph. Together, we created something that would forever keep that emotion alive.

His mission was to give his wife a deeply meaningful gift, one that captured the spirit of their love and the beauty of the California beach where they were married. However, there was a challenge: Mike didn’t have a photo of that exact spot.

In his effort to keep the surprise, Mike subtly asked his wife if she had a picture. Her response stung: “If you wanted a picture of the beach, you should have taken one back then.”

Ouch!

The surprise began to slip away, and they ended up looking through photos together. To his disappointment, none of them fully captured the magic of that special day.

Determined not to give up, they made a decision. While the beach photos didn’t work, they had a stunning sunset from Yosemite National Park, a place that held equally beautiful memories from their wedding travels. It was perfect.

We discussed every detail:

Where would the painting hang?

What size would complement their space?

Would there be any adjustments to the original image?

Mike had never been involved in the creation of art before. Watching a painting come to life was a new experience. But soon, he became fascinated.

Here's a glimpse into the process:

  1. Sketching and Mapping: The journey began with a blank canvas. I sketched the outline of the landscape, mapping out the mountains and sky in pencil. This stage is all about setting a foundation, like creating a roadmap for the painting.

  2. First Layers: The initial colors are layered thinly with a mix of paint and water, allowing the outlines to remain visible. This step establishes the basic layout and gives a sense of direction.

  3. Building the Sky: Next, I worked on the sky, using soft brush strokes to create a peaceful, glowing expanse. It needed to blend seamlessly into the mountain range. Using dry brushing—a technique where paint is added with little to no water—I was able to smooth transitions and build natural light. Mike loved watching this part, especially as the colors came alive.

  4. Detailing the Mountains: With fine brushes, I layered highlights and shadows onto the mountains. This added texture and depth, making the rocks look rugged yet perfectly balanced in the scene. Mike appreciated how the details brought the landscape to life.

  5. Foreground Elements: The bushes and stones required careful consideration. They had to anchor the composition without distracting from the main features. I layered shades of green, yellow, and brown, making adjustments to ensure everything blended naturally.

  6. Refining Details: Sometimes, I wasn’t happy with an element, like the stones beneath the sunlight. I adjusted colors and textures, enhancing the harmony of the composition. Mike was involved throughout, receiving photos and videos of the progress. “Your updates have a calming effect,” he told me.

When the painting was finally complete, Mike was overjoyed. He couldn’t wait until Christmas and gave his wife the gift early. “It’s perfect!” he said, a huge smile lighting up his face. “This might just be the best gift I’ve ever given.” Now, every time they look at the painting, they’re transported back to that magical moment in Yosemite and the experience of having their very own painting created.

Their love and adventures are preserved forever on their wall.
